Budweiser and Reality TV?

Love it or hate it, it seems that reality TV is here to stay. With more and more reality TV shows in the works, TV viewers are more than likely to encounter something that they can enjoy. However, the recent news that Budweiser is getting into the reality TV act seems a bit strange. What’s the brewery thinking and what kind of show might they produce? 

Leveraging Sports Connections

Budweiser has a long history of being connected to major US sports, ranging from football to NASCAR. That relationship will be the foundation for the new show, currently entitled, “Bud United Presents: The Big Time”. The show will focus on a group of contestants with the same sporting dream. For instance, it might feature four contestants who have always wanted to go up against an NBA all-star or something similar. Those four contestants would pair with celebrities and athletes who would train and educate the contestants. At the end of the show, one of the contestants would be chosen to go on and live his or her dream.

It’s Not Set in Stone

While it sounds like Budweiser has things well in hand, it might not be as simple as that. Word is that they’ve been shopping it around with different networks for some time now and there have yet to be any real bites. Part of that is likely due to the fact that the first of the planned 10 episodes won’t even be ready to air until summer of 2012. Another part is that it might not be a very good product. 

The Real Question – Why?

So, why is Budweiser doing this? What does reality TV have to do with brewing beer? Actually, this latest tactic has almost nothing to do with beer at all. According to the company, they are trying to “extend their global platform” beyond what they’re known for offering. 

The company has already been doing that to some extent, with the Bud House web-show during 2010. They also have some interesting new advertisements out there now. In addition, the new show won’t be about consuming beer at all, though the logo and the products will be featured during airings at “appropriate” times. 

The question of whether or not the new Budweiser reality show is a hit remains to be seen. However, with their unique connections in the world of sports and Hollywood, it might actually come to pass.
